How To Prepare For Your Family Session
Family sessions can feel a little intimidating — what if the kids won’t cooperate? What if you feel awkward? What if someone spills juice on their outfit five minutes before?
Take a deep breath. I’ve photographed dozens of families in Denver and beyond, and here’s the good news: you don’t have to have it all together to get beautiful, authentic family photos. In fact, the imperfect moments often make the best memories.
Here are my best tips to help you feel calm, prepared, and ready to enjoy your session:
1. Pick the Right Time
When scheduling your session, think about when your kids (and you!) are at your best. If your toddler melts down at 7 p.m., let’s aim for morning light or a 5pm session instead of sunset. I’m happy to work with you to find a time of day that feels good for your family’s rhythms. Another thing to consider is the right time of year - if you want outdoor photos in October (for those family Christmas cards), it might be chilly. In which case a studio session might work better.
2. What To Wear
When it comes to outfits, my rule of thumb is: coordinated > identical. Choose a color palette of 3–4 complementary colors and let everyone pick pieces within that palette. Neutrals, soft earth tones, and muted jewel tones photograph beautifully. Let nature and location guide the palette—greens and blues for spring, mustard or rust for fall, earth tones for outdoor sessions.
Some quick tips:
Avoid logos, big graphics, and neon colors.
Layers and textures (like knits, denim, linen) look great.
Make sure everyone feels comfortable in what they’re wearing — no scratchy tags or stiff collars.
If you want, I’m happy to help you choose your palette — just send me a quick text or email with what you’re thinking!
3. Keep It Low‑Pressure
Kids don’t always “perform” on cue — and that’s okay! My style is documentary and relaxed, which means I expect (and embrace) a little chaos. Don’t worry about telling your kids to smile at the camera or behave perfectly. I’ll guide you with prompts and games that feel natural and fun, and I’ll capture the authentic connections between you.
Same goes for partners who are “not into photos.” I promise it won’t be stiff or awkward — and yes, dads survive. Maybe everyone gets some sort of treat after lol!
4. Bring the Essentials
I recommend bringing a small bag with these just in case:
Water & snacks (non‑messy ones!)
Wipes/tissues
Hairbrush or comb
Backup outfit for little ones
If we’re at a park or somewhere outdoors, maybe also throw in bug spray and sunscreen.
5. Relax and Have Fun!
The best photos happen when you lean into the moment. Cuddle your kids, laugh, chase each other — and don’t worry if someone cries or makes a funny face. That’s all part of your story.
Trust me to direct and capture the magic — all you have to do is show up and love on your people.
Ready to Book?
Family sessions are 45 minutes and cost $600 and take place within 45 minutes of Denver. You will receive 45-70 high-res, edited photos within 2 weeks of the session. Most of these sessions above are at golden hour or a studio but I am happy to work around what works best for your family! Locations are based around what is most convenient (easy parking and not a lot of walking or hiking involved!). We can also do an “at-home session.” I once did an entire session based around the kids’ “nighttime routine,” and it was magical (think bubble baths and jumping on the bed in their PJs). Or based around the seasons - we could do popsicles and sprinklers in the backyard for summer or jumping in the leaves or picking out pumpkins for fall. I have a lot of “documentary-style ideas” - so reach out if you want something outside of the norm!
I have limited availability for family sessions during wedding season, but I am happy to make it work if I can! Reach out in advance if you know it’s something you want to do.
