Session at the Sand Dunes with Nabilla and Alex

When I threw out different location ideas to Nabilla and Alex for their engagement session, we narrowed it down to either Lakeside Amusement Park or the Sand Dunes. From those options alone I knew it was going to be a fun session. Unfortunately Lakeside never ended up opening this summer so we started planning our Sand Dunes session. Adventure here we come.

Nabilla and Alex had never been to the Sand Dunes which was super exciting for me. To be with someone when they experience this place for the first time is like Christmas morning - I can’t think of how to describe it. When you are in the middle of the dunes surrounded by sand and amazing views there is nothing wrong with the world. There is no pandemic or injustice or wild fires. Just sand. Ha. At least this is how I feel. It is magical.

I call myself an “adventure photographer” because nature makes me feel alive. The last time I did a session at the Sand Dunes it started pouring down rain and it was stormy. You just never know what it’s going to be like (especially in late September - the forecast was showing snow for later in the evening!). I have no doubt that studio photographers are creative artist but there is something about the lack of control that gives me energy.

As the sun (and the temperature) went down and Alex and Nabilla changed form their traditional Indonesian attire (so cool!) to their Colorado mountain wear - I took a few more shots. We hustled back through the sand back to our car. I glanced back at the Sand Dunes thanking them for the beauty and mystery they give to us.
